When I was at Google, we talked a lot about the changing nature of leadership. We talked about mindsets, self awareness, and complexity. But we didn’t really talk about trust. Trust is a funny thing. It permeates nearly every aspect of life, and it shapes our decision-making, our beliefs, and our actions more than any other element of human existence.
In today’s climate, trust is more important than ever. Leaders have to trust their teams to make more autonomous decisions if they are to keep up with the changing world around them. Companies have to trust every employee to manage their time well and make sound judgments about when, where, and how they work if hybrid working models are ever going to be successful. And everyone has to trust that things will change when they raise concerns about their experience at work – because it’s when employees lose hope that change is possible, when they lose trust in those who are steering the ship, that they leave.
